Acoustics for Community Halls and Places of Worship

Expert advice from SRS

Acoustics for Community Halls and Places of Worship

Soundproofing community halls and places of worship such as churches is vital, as anyone who's delivered a speech or sermon, or sung in one, will tell you. Community halls, churches and other places of worship tend to be large, open areas with hard, acoustically reflective surfaces. This can result in speech and song being subject to lots of echo and reverberation.

It can spoil performances and seriously effect the intelligibility of speech in meetings, mass, prayer and fetes, among other events.

Soundproofing in places of worship and community halls is affected by the type of building, as they all have their own requirements. Sometimes, it may be necessary to ‘tune’ the room, depending on how it's used. Recommended for soundproofing churches, community halls and places of worship is the Sonata range of products.

Sonata are versatile and high-performance products. Allied with the experience and knowledge of the qualified acoustic technical team at Sound Reduction Systems Ltd (SRS), they can be a major help when soundproofing places of worship and community halls.

Sonata acoustic panels for community halls and churches

Sound Reduction in a place of worshipWhen soundproofing community halls, churches or other places of worship, Sonata Aurio offers an excellent application for soundproofing walls and ceilings. It can be installed cleanly and quickly with our recommended adhesive. Sonata Aurio comprises a technical acoustic foam with either a factory-applied fabric finish or a factory-applied PVC paint finish that's applied to the face, edges and back return.

Another alternative method of soundproofing community halls, churches or other places of worship, is Sonata Vario, an absorber that comprises technical acoustic foam bonded to a rear metal support frame pre-finished with precision laser-cut fixing apertures. Sonata Vario absorbers are installed onto walls, using proprietary brackets, or ceilings, using a suspension pack. They can be fitted in either portrait or landscape orientation.

Soundproofing churches and community halls with acoustic absorbers

Maxislab Masonry Wall SoundproofingFor soundproofing in community halls, churches and place of worship, Sonata Acoustics absorbers are also a good option. They come with high acoustic performance, are easy to install, are free from mineral fibre and glass wool, and are aesthetically pleasing.

For soundproofing between rooms in community halls, churches and place of worship, SRS has a range of high-performance soundproofing materials for walls, floors and ceilings, too.

Maxiboard is a good option for soundproofing community halls, churches and other places of worship. Maxiboard can be fixed to resilient bars attached to the wall or ceiling, to create a ‘floating’ wall with minimal loss of space. At SRS, we also supply acoustic mastics and sealants for a full service.

Soundproofing for community halls and churches

Acoustilay can also be used for soundproofing community halls, churches and other places of worship. Maxideck can also be used: this is high-density, 28mm composite acoustic flooring overlay board. It can be laid on top of floorboards, beneath the finished floor surface in halls, churches and other places of worship.

Another soundproofing device for community halls and places of worship is SubPrimo, an acoustic underlay for laminate and timber flooring. SubPrimo is loose-laid onto the floor before the laminate or timber floor goes down. It can be used with Maxi 60 Ceiling as part of the Total Party Floor Solution.

FAQ: Acoustics for Community Halls and Places of Worship

Why do community halls and places of worship often have poor acoustics?

These buildings are usually large, open spaces with hard, reflective surfaces. This causes sound to bounce around the room, creating echo and long reverberation, which makes speech unclear and music less enjoyable.

Why is soundproofing important in these spaces?

Poor acoustics can:

  • Make speech difficult to understand
  • Reduce the quality of singing or performances
  • Affect meetings, prayer, sermons, and community events

Good soundproofing improves clarity and comfort for everyone using the space.

Do different buildings need different acoustic treatments?

Yes. Each hall, church, or worship space has its own structure and acoustic behaviour. Sometimes the room even needs to be “tuned” depending on how it is used (speech, music, mixed activities).

What products are recommended for improving acoustics?

The Sonata range of acoustic products from Sound Reduction Systems are high‑performance and suitable for large reflective spaces.

What is Sonata Aurio?

  • Contain no mineral fibre or glass wool
  • Visually attractive
  • Suitable for reducing echo and improving clarity.

How can sound be reduced between rooms?

For soundproofing walls, floors, and ceilings between rooms, SRS recommends Maxiboard, a high‑performance system that can be fixed to resilient bars to create a floating wall with minimal space loss.

Are there solutions for floors?

Sound Reduction Systems offer a range of products designed for soundproofing floors:

  • Acoustilay – for general soundproofing
  • Maxideck – a dense acoustic flooring board installed beneath the finished floor
  • Sub Primo – an acoustic underlay for laminate or timber floors

These help reduce impact noise and improve overall acoustic comfort.
