Noise Coming Through Floors and Ceilings - Ceiling Treatment - Removed or Retained

Introduction

Noise coming through floors and ceilings What ceiling treatments are available when you're experiencing noise through floors? There are two approaches to the treatment of noise through floors, depending on whether you can work on the surface of the floor above or the ceiling in the room below, and the type of noise that you’re suffering from. It can help to have access to both the floor and the ceiling, as this maximises the effect, but don’t worry if you haven’t.

Products: Maxiboard; SRS Gripfix; SRS Acoustic Sealant; Maxi Resilient Bars; 100mm Mineral Fibre Slab; Maxi HP Screws; 70 x 5mm Self Drilling Screws.

Tools: Tape Measure; Sealant Gun; Circular saw, Jigsaw or Hand saw; Electric Drill/Screwdriver; Step Ladders; Trimming Knife

With this kind of ceiling treatment, you can reduce the noise going up or down through a ceiling using Maxiboard. You can either replace the existing ceiling or install it below your ceiling, if space permits. This is a particularly effective method for airborne noise problems and will significantly reduce the level of impact noise.

Method*:

Fix Maxi Resilient bars perpendicular to the joists at 400mm centres (300mm if you need a one-hour fire rating). Put mineral fibre slab between the joists, and screw the Maxiboards to the resilient bars. Place a bead of SRS Gripfix along the edge of each board. Remove the shiplap edge where Maxiboard abuts a wall, and place a bead of SRS Acoustic Sealant along the cut edge. Overboard the Maxiboard with a layer of standard 9.5mm wallboard (12.5mm fire-rated plasterboard if you need an hour's fire separation) and a skim coat of plaster to finish. Decorate to taste.

If you want to achieve one-hour fire rating with your ceiling treatment, use Maxiboard resilient bars spanning the timber joists across the full width of ceiling. You should use 70mm x 5mm self-drilling screws. They should be fitted at the edges of the ceiling at a maximum of 300mm centres in between. Fit the Maxiboard panels into the resilient bars using 30mm x 3.9mm Maxi HP screws. Fixing only to the resilient bar in staggered half-panel overlaps, fix the screws at 300mm centres maximum and 20mm from the edges of each board and at the midpoint.

Use a bead of SRS Gripfix on the shiplap edges before installation. Remove the shiplap edge where the Maxiboard panels adjoin a perimeter wall and use SRS Acoustic Sealant on the edge. There must be no gaps between the Maxiboard panels.

For a half-hour fire rating, omit the 12.5mm fire-rated plasterboard from the Maxi 60 ceiling construction and install the Maxiboard resilient bars at 400mm centres. Fix the Maxiboard panels to the resilient bars with 30mm x 3.9mm Maxi HP screws.

If retaining the existing ceiling:

NOTES:

  • Great care should be taken to ensure no screw fixings penetrate through the resilient bars, and touch the existing ceiling or joists.

Ceiling treatment - installation guidance

Before installing Maxiboard, please refer to the following pages of the website:Please click here for full installation guidance.

For clarification on any point please contact the SRS technical team on 01204 380074.

Before installing the resilient bars and Maxiboard, as above, fit 50mm × 50mm softwood timber battens at 600mm centres through the ceiling into the joists. You can then screw-fix the resilient bars to the timber battens using an appropriate length of fixing. You should then install 50mm mineral fibre in between the battens, and the Maxiboard installed as per the above guidance.

If none of the above fits the issues you're having with ceiling treatments and ceiling noise, or maybe you have a more bespoke or specialised construction, don't worry. At SRS Ltd, we've got vast experience in these sort of ‘bespoke’ applications. Just drop an email to one of our technical team outlining your situation and we'll send you a bespoke specification. Or give us a call on 01204 380074 – we're always happy to chat about soundproofing.
